Questionnaire · Marketing & Innovation
Inventorying an organisation’s intangible assets
An intangible assets inventory precedes any protection or commercial exploitation. Indeed, a growing share of value lies in assets absent from the balance sheet: distinctive signs, content, software, files, methods. Protecting them first requires identifying them and establishing their ownership. The questionnaire thus organises this inventory.

Sections of the intangible assets inventory questionnaire
- Identification of the organisation.
- Trademarks and distinctive signs.
- Creations: in particular, content, software and visuals.
- Know-how and confidential information.
- Data: in particular, files and databases.
- Patents and industrial designs.
- Contracts, then a summary; finally, notes for use.
When to conduct an intangible assets inventory
The questionnaire serves first to prepare a protection plan: filings, clauses and confidentiality measures. It also serves before a fundraising, a sale or a transfer of the business. In addition, it informs a valuation of the company.
Its intended users include, in particular, executives and marketing departments. The document also concerns promoters of innovative projects.
Instructions for use
The questionnaire is completed first with senior management, then with the functions that create or use the assets. The inventory then links each asset to its owner and its media. In addition, the inventory records third-party rights from this stage. Finally, the summary prioritises the actions: filing, contractual clause or confidentiality measure.
Expected outcome
At the end of the questionnaire, the organisation has a dated inventory of its intangible assets. Each asset has an identified owner and recorded media. Consequently, protection priorities emerge clearly, as do the points to be regularised before a capital transaction.

Preparing a leadership transition
Preparing a leadership transition takes several years, not a few weeks. The organisation is indeed highly vulnerable at this stage: loss of know-how, concern among staff, challenges to the successor.
